A List of the Pros and Cons of Junk Removal Companies
As the owner of a junk removal company, it’s important for me to view our service from the eyes of a consumer. Often times, we are subjective because we see the value in our company and the services we provide, but in order to be transparent and improve, we need to also recognize the cons and find ways to counter balance them with positives. So, we have developed the pros and cons of junk removal companies. Let’s start with a list of cons first; we compiled this list from comments we’ve received during inquires:
The Pros of Junk Removal Companies
Screened, Uniformed Employees
Professional junk removal companies will insure that the removers they send to your job site are screened, uniformed and professional so that you don’t have to worry about who will be coming to your home and working inside your house. This does quite a bit to put the mind at ease.
Fully Licensed and Insured
Unlike the fly by night operations, professional junk removal companies are fully licensed, which is important when vetting the companies you choose between. In addition, they are fully insured. Their employees, their apparatus and the business are fully insured so that if something goes wrong, you the homeowner are protected. When companies don’t have this, you the homeowner are at risk of a sketchy company doing damage to your home and worse case, coming after you if someone gets hurt.
Recycling, Repurposing, Reusing and Donating
Although higher priced than their uninsured, unlicensed and illegally dumping counterparts, professional junk removal companies will do much more with your service. After removing the items, they will make every effort to donate, reuse, repurpose and recycle the items before ever legally dumping anything. When able to donate, they send you a tax deductible receipt so that you get credit for the service you paid for.
Reliability
Although they will often give you a two hour arrival window, professional junk removal companies do so because that allows you to schedule days in advance. On the flip side, companies that give you an exact time, often have to wait til the day of the service or hours before. Being able to schedule a couple days in advance and get an accurate arrival window is much more convenient and reliable to the companies that live hour to hour.
The Cons of Junk Removal Companies
Too Expensive
When juxtaposed with say a fly by night company on Craigslist, junk removal companies are higher priced. For the consumer that’s just looking for the cheapest option to get rid of their items, often times junk removal companies will lose to an uninsured, unlicensed and unprofessional hauler on cost. This is typically because fly by night operations work on a cash basis and avoid the IRS altogether, thereby all associated insurance costs, disposal costs or unemployment and payroll taxes.
Volume Pricing
Many junk removal companies will charge by volume to determine their pricing. This can seem unreasonable depending on the item. On the other hand, smaller outfits that may not be a hauling company will charge bare bones pricing regardless of the item and its size. More than likely, these companies can do this because they don’t have to worry about insurance costs because they don’t carry it, payroll tax because they don’t register their employees or disposal costs because they often use harmful, illegal dumping methods.
Two Hour Appointment Windows
Professional junk removal companies will often give two hour arrival windows so they can give the customer a reasonable expectation of when they will arrive. Given that these companies often have multiple appointments throughout the day, they won’t guarantee a specific arrival time. Some customers may not like this aspect and would rather have a pinpoint time, i.e. 9:15am as opposed to 9:00-11:00am.
This is a small list of the pros and cons of junk removal companies. However, it hits the important topics when discussing the pros and cons of junk removal companies.
