Tips for Organizing Clutter in The New Year

Happy New Year! We, at Fire Dawgs, hope you are looking forward to 2014 as much as we are. Chances are you made some New Year’s resolutions about two weeks ago. Maybe your goal for the New Year is remove unneeded clutter and organize your life. Great goal! Now, how do you achieve it? Fire Dawgs Indianapolis has some tested tips to help you stop clutter from accumulating in your home and workspace. Below you will find Fire Dawgs’ tips for organizing clutter.

1. Organize your mail as soon as you bring it in.

I always recycle the junk mail and envelopes first and start filing the necessary mail right away. I have labeled slots for important mail in our antique bureau, a family heirloom. We also have a filing cabinet in our home office; I file important mail in designated folders right away.

2. Buy less!

When shopping, I ask myself two questions: “Do I need it?” and “Do I absolutely love it?” After accumulating too much stuff: clothes, handbags, picture frames, coffee mugs; all things I didn’t need, I made the decision to only purchase items that I need or love. This philosophy has helped me feel more at ease in my home with less clutter.

3. Schedule item purges.

Set a number of items that works for you: 15, 20, 25, and purge that amount of unwanted items every month. Go from room-to-room in house, scour your car, search your garage to purge and clean out items you simply don’t need, Don’t forget to ask yourself: “Do I need it?” and “Do I absolutely love it?” Fire Dawgs can always help you donate, recycle, and remove the clutter you don’t need.

4. Put everything in its place before going to bed.

This tip encourages you to start everyday fresh! I put all the kids’ stuff in designated baskets and bins. I organize the kitchen by ensuring that dishes are out of the sink and in the dishwasher. I put my husband’s things (wallet, slippers, work documents, etc) near his work bag, so he knows to either use them or put them away. Always wait until the end of the day to go into reset mode. If you try to organize all your highly-used items in the middle of the day, they will just get dragged back out and your efforts will seem futile, making you feel stressed. My goal before I go to bed is to get every room back to “ready,” meaning ready for guests or other people to see.

5. Create an organizing schedule.

Every month I assign one major organizing task to tackle. In January I clean out my basement, throwing all unwanted holiday décor items and organizing the items I want to keep; whereas, in the warmer months of spring, I clean out my garage to prepare for the warm summer months and make room for backyard barbeques. If you adopt a monthly organizing schedule, Fire Dawgs can help you recycle, reuse, or donate unwanted items.
